First "Battleship" launched abroad with great success, and now The Wrap reports that "The Avengers" smashed overseas box-office records with a $178 million haul ahead of its May 4 U.S. opening.

The Josh Whedon directed film was written by Whedon and comic-book legend Stan Lee, and stars Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America, Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, and Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts.
