I think the last "National Lampoon" spoof that got my full attention was "Vacation," and that was way back in 1983. Somewhere along the line, nudity and gross-out humor replaced situational comedy and funny lines in films that also included a few gross-and-sex elements. But even in "National Lampoon" movies that bomb at the box office (or, as in the case of "The Legend of Awesomest Maximus," get a limited release so they can avoid the direct-to-video label), there are still a few laugh-out-loud moments. To my knowledge, this is the only film that has a Trojan Penis in it . . . though I guess technically speaking there would be a lot of them in "Troy."
This one is directed by Jeff Kanew ("Troop Beverly Hills," "Revenge of the Nerds") and stars Will Sasso as Awesomest Maximus, Russell Peters as Pervius, Ian Ziering as Testiclees, Kristanna Loken as Hotessa, and Rip Torn as King Looney. That pretty much says it all, doesn't it? Here's the release:
CHATSWORTH, Calif.– On March 20th, Image Entertainment proudly presents "National Lampoon’s The Legend of Awesomest Maximus" on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Download. "National Lampoon’s The Legend of Awesomest Maximus" is an epic comedy that’s as big and bold as its name, a movie with the courage and strength to spoof the sword and sandal genre with hilarious take-offs that skewer every gladiator cliché from "300" to "Braveheart." This is the wild and bawdy brand of humor that’s become synonymous with the National Lampoon brand in classic films like "Animal House" and "Vacation." The SRP is $29.97 for Blu-ray and $27.97 for DVD.
"National Lampoon’s The Legend of Awesomest Maximus" is from the director of "Revenge of the Nerds," and it’s easily the most outrageous parody in years. Finally a film with more laughs than "Gladiator," hotter bods than "Troy," and army of more men than 300—well, one more man! Horny King Looney of Troy (Rip Torn, "Men in Black") sends slacker general Awesomest Maximus (Will Sasso, “Mad TV,” "The Three Stooges") to maintain peace with rival King Erotic of Greece. But when Prince Orlando, who's more into fashion than fighting, steals the King's wife Ellen (Sophie Monk, "Date Movie") to be his BFF, it's war! Will Awesomest live up to his godly destiny? Can he defeat the mighty warrior Testiclees (Ian Ziering, “Beverly Hills 90210”)?
Can he light a fire under his gold-digging wife Hotessa (Kristanna Loken, "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines")? The only thing that can be predicted is that this is one savagely funny farce from the people know how to throw a toga party!
Co-starring Tony Cox ("Bad Santa"), Deon Richmond ("Not Another Teen Movie," "Hatchet") and Russell Peters ("New Year’s Eve"), with rapper Ludacris as narrator, a bevy of beautiful slave girls and a giant “Trojan Penis,” "National Lampoon’s The Legend of Awesomest Maximus" is one of the most unforgettable comedies you’ll see this year—one might even say, it’s the most awesomest comedy of the year!
