Kevin Smith's SModcast Pictures launches its first film: BINDLESTIFFS
Kevin Smith is bucking the system again. Whether it's shocking a commencement audience at Illinois Wesleyan University by sharing made-up memories of threesomes (and naming actual students whose parents and grandparents were in the audience), bypassing the distrubution process by distributing his film "Red State" on his own, or, now, creating his own company to promote indie films, Smith's actions show that he has as much anti-establishment Jay in him as he does Silent Bob.
The first film to be released via Kevin Smith's SModcast Pictures Presents banner, "Bindlestiffs," will premiere nationwide on VOD on June 19 and the week before that Smith will go on theatrical tour to promote the film by Andrew Edison and Luke Loftin. Here's the release:
Los Angeles, CA (June 6, 2012) - Berry Meyerowitz, President & CEO of Phase 4 Films, announced today that Andrew Edison's high school comedy "Bindlestiffs," the company's first acquisition under their new "Kevin Smith's SModcast Pictures Presents" label, will kick off an event theatrical tour on June 12th in New York City. Kevin Smith and the filmmakers will be in attendance for Q&As at each of the tour stops for the film. Edison wrote the screenplay with Luke Loftin, and the two also produced (with Mike Akel and Matt Patterson) and star in the film. "Bindlestiffs" made its world premiere at the 2012 Slamdance Film Festival where it took home the Audience Award for Best Feature Narrative. Phase 4 will also release the film nationwide on VOD on June 19th.
In "Bindlestiffs," three high school virgins, suspended from school on a graffiti charge, flee to the city to live out the plot of The Catcher in the Rye. The story unfolds as they surrender their virginities to hobos, prostitutes and crack fiends.
"Bindlestiffs" event tour dates and cities are as follows:
June 12th - New York City, Cinema 123
June 13th - Philadelphia, Ritz East
June 17th - San Antonio, Park North, Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas
June 18th - Austin, South Lamar Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas

When the film's acquisition was announced, Smith had said: "SModcast Pictures Presents is ecstatic about our first feature, a ballsy high school comedy that was conceived by real, live high schoolers (who are actually way funnier than the 20-something adults who usually play teens in movies)! This mind-bendingly original and gut-bustingly hysterical first film is so confidently made and one-of-a-kind, I cannot wait to stand on a stage beside the 'Bindlestiffs' boys and smell the room after the audience has pissed themselves laughing at their debut film."
Phase 4 and SModcast Pictures' distribution partnership, which was announced in early 2012, allows Phase 4 to acquire exclusive rights to exhibit and distribute up to twelve films per year under Smith's banner. Phase 4 will release four of these films theatrically each year, and these will include a live tour with Kevin Smith.
