South African Garratts: Steam Around The World

The cloud of steam on the South African horizon belonged to the narrow gauge Garratt locomotives. Serving the industrial railways of South Africa in the 1990s, these articulated locomotives were hard workers. This 1995 trip on a special steam excursion recorded the Garratts on several railways, including a two and one-half foot gauge line. Not long after our trip, the Garratts were replaced by diesels.
