Playboy, the premier source for men's entertainment media, has had success in producing direct-to-video movies that surprisingly gets increasingly better in terms of quality and performance. Most of these movies still feature clichéd and predictable stories but the seemingly unending numbers of gorgeous actresses that cycle through these movies more than try to make up for that deficiency. After all, Playboy is better known for showcasing stunning beauties rather than for dramatic storylines in their feature films.

"Sexy Movie" is, by all accounts, a commendable Playboy effort in fusing comedy and erotica that happens to yield better than expected results. The story has a been-there, done-that feeling to it, but with the help of some physical comedy and funny comedic acting among some of the cast, I was pleasantly surprised.

"Sexy Movie" tells the story of roommates Jay (Kelly Couch) and Scott (G. Alan Harris) are both down on their luck as they struggle every month to pay their rent. While Jay is an aspiring filmmaker looking to get into an important studio workshop program, Scott is always looking for the easy out by coming up with one get-rich-quick scheme after another. Jay has taken out a loan to make a film that he hopes would get him accepted into the program but his annoying girlfriend Teri (Dawn Arellano) keeps insisting that he give up his love for filmmaking and choose a more stable career. Jay, being the good boyfriend that he is, promises that this will be his last shot.

As fate would have it, Jay gets a last-minute call up to replace the cameraman at a film shoot. Jumping at the chance to earn an extra buck, Jay agrees, only to find out when he gets there, that the film he is about to shoot is a skin flick. When the director of the film abruptly quits, Jay is then asked to take over the task of directing, as well as doing the camerawork. Of course, by applying his enormous talent, Jay is able to produce, what else, but a porno masterpiece! Scott eventually gets wind of Jay's new job and he immediately jumps at the chance to make the most out of the golden opportunity to meet porn stars and make some money at the same time. What follows is a madcap chain of events that manages to produce some pretty hilarious moments. Real-life porn stars, Kaylynn and Mary Carey (listed as Mary Ellen in this movie) star as Shadow and Starr respectively, who get caught up in the fray and join the guys in their new endeavor to super stardom. Mary Carey, as many of you may know, was in the headlines recently for her unsuccessful run as a Californian gubernatorial candidate.

From the start, Playboy films like "Sexy Movie" are never meant to be anything more than a showcase for the beautiful actresses to show off their sumptuous bodies and to titillate the audience with sensual lovemaking scenes. Clever camera angles try to shield the viewer from seeing if real sex ever takes place between the couples but it is of course noticeable. Even when the lovemaking is simulated, the actors try very hard to make it look and sound as real as possible.

Let's face it, no one watches a Playboy flick for the story. However, in "Sexy Movie", the comedic storyline is as enjoyable as watching the beautiful girls themselves. Even with a predictable story, "Sexy Movie" is able to overcome its inherent weaknesses and blow past some of my preconceptions. Credit must be given to G. Allan Harris for his humorous performance throughout the movie.

Video:
With a full screen aspect ratio of 1.33:1, the video quality is clear without any hint of dirt or blemishes. Its quality is expectedly above average due to its recent production. Skin tones and colors look natural. No language subtitles are offered as an option on this disc.

Audio:
Only an English Dolby Surround 2.0 audio track is included on this disc. No other language tracks are available. Mostly concentrated in front with surround effects virtually non-existent, the audio quality receives only a below average grade. However, both dialogue and music come through clearly without any distortion.

Extras:
Unfortunately, there are scarcely any bonus features that are of any interest. First, a brief "Behind-the-Scenes" extra which features interviews with Mary Ellen and Kaylynn as they talk about one of the scenes in the movie. Next, there is a "Photo Gallery" section, which slowly runs through a slideshow of snapshots taken from the movie. Finally there are trailers of other Playboy releases like "Thrust", "The Secret Cellar", "The Sex Substitute 2", "Vinyl Dolls" and "Stolen Sex Tapes".

Film Value:
Playboy offers two DVD versions of "Sexy Movie"--one unrated and the other rated "R". Anyone expecting a hardcore skin flick should look elsewhere as Playboy feature films are all about style, sensuality and beautiful women. "Sexy Movie" will satisfy anyone looking for 90 minutes worth of erotic and sexy entertainment that is coupled with hilarious situations and better-than-average comedic acting.
