If you like light stories about young love, in all its awkward glory and mistaken or misread thoughts and intentions, then you’ll love this interesting film called Flipped.
Surprisingly, this 2010 film is a cute adaptation of a young adult novel. Rob Reiner directed this film version, and it features two children who seem to be attracted to each other – but at different age levels and timeframes. The feisty girl, Juli, was in love with new neighbor Bryce from the get go. But the guy got into the picture quite late.
The simple story is full of deep emotions and interesting characters. But what carries the film well is the interesting interaction between the two teen leads. The feisty girl also holds her own, as the sometimes clueless boy tries to catch up with things eventually. It’s really a fun watch!
There are other stories out there that pretty much carries similar themes about childhood loves, awkward teen feelings, and interestingly quirky circumstances. Here’s a list of those movies like Flipped.
1. Moonrise Kingdom
Leave it to Wes Anderson to deliver a very picturesque yet cutely awkward film about two young children in love. That’s Moonrise Kingdom.
The 2012 film is about an orphan boy named Sam, who’s living in the 1960s. He has a pen-pal named Suzy. They’re both 12 years old, and they get infatuated with each other through their letter-writing exchanges. They try to plan to see each other and spend time together.
The time came when Sam attended a scouting summer camp in an island where Suzy also lives. The two young children are highly intelligent and somewhat advanced in thinking for their age. So of course, their running off leaves a trail of adventures for them and the people trying to find them! Go watch this one and see how it fares as one of those movies like Flipped. You’ll love this one!
2. Edward Scissorhands
It’s one thing to get infatuated with a new boy in town. But what if that boy has scissors for hands? Ouch!
That’s the story of Edward Scissorhands, the brilliant 1990 film by director Tim Burton. Starring Johnny Depp in the titular role, he meets Kim, the daughter of the Avon lady who took him home with her. Kim is played by Winona Ryder, and she’s a teen here who got fascinated with Edward as well.
While the story focuses more on the life of Edward as he tries to integrate with suburban society, the love story subplot of the two older teens also bears looking into. The romance is innocent yet sweet, something we all aspire to have. And for that, it’s proper that it’s here in our list of movies like Flipped.
3. My Girl
When it comes to awkward coming of age stories, perhaps My Girl should be there at the top of the list. But when it comes to having awkward feelings for another, then it could be here in our list of movies like Flipped.
The film stars Macaulay Culkin as a boy who’s very allergic to everything. He’s the friend and neighbor of the lead named Vada, played by Anna Chlumsky. It’s the early ‘70s, and times are as innocent as the children who live in them.
The story is really a nice throwback to these simpler times prior to the digital age. The development of the deep affection between the two characters are also so heartfelt and innocent. Watch this, but be prepared for the waterworks to come!

It won’t exactly be innocently awkward if you get paid to woo a girl, now, will it? And why do that? Simple: because someone wants to date the girl’s sister. And to date the sister, the girl has to date first!
Confused? Don’t be. This stage play is as clear as day when Shakespeare wrote it. And it’s as funny as hell when they adapted it for Hollywood in 1999. The film is 10 Things I Hate About You, starring Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger.
This film is in our list of movies like Flipped because it indeed tries to flip the usual teen romance angle here. But as it’s set in the ‘90s, the film gets enveloped with romantic nostalgia that’s as witty as ever. So go watch this one!

Josh Hutcherson stars in Little Manhattan back when he was just little!

The 2007 film stars Ellen Page in the titular role of the 16 year old teen who accidentally got pregnant. Michael Cera plays Paulie, the father of the baby. It’s interesting how the two would negotiate this new detail in their life. And this is where the film went.
